Salvage, fuel spill, and a wake you did not think twice about.

A boat policy covers far more than damage to the hull. Here is what it actually protects, why the liability side matters more than the price, and what a claim looks like when coverage runs short.

THE SHORT VERSION

A boat policy covers the vessel itself, but the larger risk is liability for injuries, property damage, and the cost of cleaning up after an accident.

Salvage and fuel spill coverage can cost more than the boat itself, and they are easy to underinsure.

Adequate liability, often paired with an umbrella, is the part of a boat policy that protects your assets.

What a boat policy is really doing

A boat policy is doing several jobs at once. It repairs or replaces the vessel. It covers your liability if you injure someone or damage their property. It pays to remove your boat if it sinks or grounds, which is called salvage. And it handles the cost of a fuel spill, which is regulated and can be expensive. Buyers tend to focus on the value of the boat and overlook the three jobs that carry the real financial risk.

Liability on the water works much like liability on the road. A wake that swamps another vessel, a collision, or a swimmer struck near the boat can all lead to serious injury claims. On the water there are also costs that have no equivalent on land. If your boat sinks in a channel, you are responsible for removing it, and salvage operations are labor intensive and costly.

Why the pricier policy is often the better buy

Two boat policies can quote the same price and protect you very differently. The cheaper one usually lowers the liability limit, caps salvage and fuel spill coverage, settles the hull at actual cash value, or narrows where and when you are covered. These limits are quiet until the day you need them.

The exposure is larger than most owners expect. Salvage and environmental cleanup alone can exceed the value of the boat. A serious injury claim can run well past a low liability limit. Raising those limits is generally a modest change in premium, while the risk it removes is the full cost of a rescue, a cleanup, and a lawsuit combined.

Coverage territory matters too. A policy that covers you at the dock but not offshore, or in one state but not the next, can leave you exposed exactly when you travel. A well written policy matches how and where you actually use the boat, so a covered trip does not become an uncovered claim.

Real-World Example

A grounding, a fuel leak, and a bill far past the boat's value.

An owner ran aground during an evening return to the marina. The hull was breached and fuel began to leak into the water. The boat itself was worth a modest amount, but the response was not about the boat.

A salvage crew was needed to refloat and remove the vessel, and an environmental cleanup was required for the spilled fuel. Together those costs ran several times higher than the value of the boat. The owner's policy had a low cap on salvage and pollution coverage, and the balance fell to them.

Another boater in the same marina carried full salvage and fuel spill coverage along with a higher liability limit and an umbrella. When a similar accident happened to them, the policy covered the recovery, the cleanup, and the liability in full. The difference was a slightly higher premium chosen when the policy was written.
